What does gluten free mean?

Gluten is a protein that naturally occurs in a gluten-containing grain such as wheat, rye, barley, oat and the derivatives of these grains, including malt and brewer’s yeast. Gluten may cause adverse health effects in persons with celiac disease and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, therefore a diet free of gluten is required to assist in the treatment of these conditions.(1)

The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ)(2) set out information on how to define the term “gluten-free” and any other nutrition and health claims in food labels. This information is outlined here.

The claim condition that must be met for gluten-free foods is that “the food must NOT contain: (a) detectable gluten; or (b) oats or oat products; or (c) cereals containing gluten that have been malted, or products of such cereals”(2).

Lemon Leaf complies with this rule and thus qualifies to display the gluten-free claim in our food labels. In addition, our products are manufactured following strict food safety measures to avoid any cross-contamination with gluten containing products. Lemon Leaf products are totally safe for people intolerant to gluten. However, people with Coeliac disease may choose only gluten-free certified products. Eating gluten free foods DON’T cause any harm

Whether you must avoid gluten or not, eating foods that are gluten-free will not cause any digestive problems on your body and no nutrients are going to be missed. Although many gluten-free foods tend to be poor in fibre and vitamins that are added to wheat flours, this is untrue for the Lemon Leaf products.

Lemon Leaf lasagnes, for instance, are made from lupin flour that is a great source of protein, fibre, folate, magnesium, and potassium (3).
